Washington, DC - The National Institute on Aging, part of the National Institutes of Health, has awarded the University of California, Berkeley a grant to capture PET and MRI images of participants in the U.S. Protect Brain Health through lifestyle Intervention to Reduce risk (U.S. POINTER). The NIA grant is for the U.S. POINTER Neuroimaging Ancillary Study and is expected to total $47 million over five years pending availability of funds (NIH grant number R01AG062689).

Phoenix, Arizona - A 14-year-old’s innovative approach to prevent tampering and misuse of opioid pills won a first place Addiction Science Award at the 2019 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF)—the world’s largest science competition for high school students. The awards are coordinated by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), part of the National Institutes of Health, and Friends of NIDA, a coalition that supports NIDA’s mission. The Intel ISEF Addiction Science Awards were presented at a ceremony Thursday night at the Phoenix Convention Center in Phoenix, Arizona.

NIH researcher presents encouraging results for gene therapy for severe sickle cell disease

San Diego, California - A scientist from the National Institutes of Health will present promising, early results from a human clinical trial testing a novel gene replacement therapy in people with severe sickle cell disease. Preliminary findings suggest that the approach has an acceptable level of safety and might help patients consistently produce normal red blood cells instead of the sickle-shaped ones that mark this painful, life-threatening disease.
